Brad&Dave&Mike helped build an eco-friendly homes for charity.

Linkin Park Build Eco-Homes For Charity

LINKIN PARK swapped rock music for construction work last month (May10) to help build an eco-friendly apartment complex in California for needy families.

Vocalist Mike Shinoda, guitarist Brad Delson and bassist Dave 'Phoenix' Farrell all donned hard hats to work on the building site in Lynwood, California as part of their Music For Relief charity efforts.

The homes are energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly and will be designated for poverty-stricken families in conjunction with the band's foundation and the Habitat For Humanity organisation.

The MusiCares Foundation, Inc., was established in 1989 by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Meant for musicians to have a place to turn, in times of financial, personal, or medical crisis.... [more here]

Talinda donated some money for that organization in 2008! ;)

Brad Delson to keynote UCLA commencement

Brad Delson, a UCLA alumnus and lead guitarist for the Grammy-winning band Linkin Park, will deliver keynote remarks at the UCLA College of Letters and Science commencement ceremony on June 12, campus officials announced today.

Delson earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies from UCLA, graduating summa cum laude in 1999.

Delson and his wife established the Delson Scholarship Fund at UCLA, which annually awards four-year scholarships to extraordinary students from Huntington Park, Calif.

"Brad Delson is not only an innovative musician, but he is also a social activist who is committed to change through education," said Judith L. Smith, dean and vice provost for undergraduate education in the UCLA College of Letters and Science. "I am thrilled that Brad will be helping to commemorate this important occasion in the lives of our graduates and their families, and we are grateful that he has agreed to do so on short notice."

The ceremony, which will take place in Pauley Pavilion, is the primary commencement event for UCLA's graduating seniors.

Delson was picked based on recommendations from a selection committee after the scheduled keynote speaker, actor and UCLA alumnus James Franco, canceled the week prior to the event because of filming commitments.

Music For Relief Builds Homes with Habitat for Humanity

This past Wednesday I had the honor of helping build a home for a family that was displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The house we worked on was one of two that Music For Relief has funded to be built in the Gulf Coast.

Foundations in this area of New Orleans are required by law to be almost six feet off of the ground to protect the homes from possible future floods. We started the workday by laying the sub-floor of the house

Around noon, the first wall frame went up. During a short lunch break we heard one woman’s story of her loss during Hurricane Katrina who will be moving into her Habitat house in the next few months. She has already put in the required number of hours building to qualify for her home and is so inspired by Habitat that she continues to volunteer on other Habitat builds.

The home will look similar to these houses in Musicians’ Village when it is finished. Located in the Upper Ninth Ward, Musicians’ Village covers 8.1 acres with a total of 75 houses!

Aside from Musicians’ Village, many homes built by Habitat in New Orleans are the first in those neighborhoods to be rebuilt. The families that move into those homes are incredibly courageous. Imagine living in a neighborhood where the houses around yours have been demolished or are severely damaged by the storm that displaced you! And now for the best part...as rebuilding begins in a neighborhood, it usually sparks a hopeful reaction. More people see the courage of these leading families, and follow by returning and rebuilding their homes.
