MM: Just for fun, if you were stranded on a desert island, what movies would you want to have with you?
AS: Harold and Maude, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Bottle Rocket, Heathers, Garden State.  And if I can include a TV show, I’d want to bring the complete Six Feet Under series.
MM: Just for fun, if you had to choose five musicians to listen to for the rest of your life, who would they be?
AS: Mike Shinoda – Not just because I married to him – I love his music, and am so proud of the body of work he’s created, whether it’s with Fort Minor, Linkin Park or the scores he’s been a part of.
Also, Cat Stevens, The Doors, Frank Sinatra, Heart…
MM: Just for fun, what books are permanently on your bookshelf?

Being the wife of Mike Shinoda, I’m sure with no doubt you are used to the publicity and the attention of the media. But it seems like the tables have been turned and now you’re the one everybody is focusing on. How does that feel being center stage, instead of your husband?
I am extremely grateful to everyone who has read Learning Not to Drown and I love seeing the tweets and reviews and pictures of people with with book! It’s surreal to see pictures of me with fans – my fans! – up on Twitter or Facebook or Instagram – and even more surreal when someone has pulled a quote from my book to share. I am still getting used to the fact that something I wrote is published and while I enjoy speaking at events and doing interviews, my favorite things are still hanging out with my family and friends or spending some quiet time reading or writing. My family is complex and each person has their own story. Out of respect for them, I wrote this as a work of fiction. I did a ton of research – interviewed people with incarcerated family members, watched documentaries, read articles, visited message boards – all resulting in a fictional novel that is a blend of all of that with my experiences and my imagination.

Addiction, family secrets and betrayal were all an important part of Clare’s story and are issues that many people with incarcerated family members deal with on a daily basis. They all exist together in her story, so I can’t say that one speaks to me more than the others."
