One of the reasons why I write is to help people, especially kids, get through difficult times or help them heal from a traumatic experience. This is also the reason that I am actively involved in several charities. One of my favorite charities, The Friends and Helpers Foundation is doing a neat project that I thought I'd share with you. We are currently in the process of preparing homes that will be a safe place for victims of abuse to start over again. The homes are clean and in good neighborhoods, with good schools, and will help many families in years to come transition from shelter housing to their own apartments or houses.
A few weekends ago, we spend a Saturday planting the front yards of the cottages, and today, I spent with another volunteer, shopping for bedding and curtains for the bedrooms. It is an especially fun project for me, because before I discovered my love for writing, I took a few design classes (both landscape and interior). Tomorrow we set up the beds and hang the curtains. I can't wait to see how all of the goodies will look in the rooms.
